Born in Papanasam, Tamil Nadu to a businessman in the automobile industry. His father delegated him to the care of Maharshi Mahesh Yogi as a desciple.

Established the International Art of Living Foundation in 1982 which aims to relieve stress at an individual level, and to relieve disease and violence at a societal level. It works in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Exponent of "Sudarshana Kriya" -- a rhythmic breathing exercise.

The Art of Living offered courses in stress reduction after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center towers in New York city. Also in Kosovo , Iraq and Afghanistan wars and to the tsunami and hurricane Katrina victims.

In 1997, founded the International Association for Human Values (IAHV) to foster on a global scale a deeper understanding of the values that unite us as a human community."
